What this project is all about...
Over the past decade food scrap composting has gained a reputation for being a simple, sustainable way to reduce waste. In recent years, many communities around the country have recognized the benefits of composting and started their own programs. Certain cities and colleges have been especially successful in their attempts at composting and have reaped the benefits. Although they often have different methods of collecting, processing, and distributing their compost, a common methodology seems to be forming. My project is meant to look at these different places and study their strategies for implementing a comprehensive composting system. I have also attempted to take certain strengths from each of the schools and cities and see how they can be applied to us at Brown and in Providence.
At the top of this website are tabs that will guide you through my project. The first, entitled "Why Compost?" is a brief description of what composting is and how it benefits our environment. The "Cities" and "Colleges" tabs detail different cities and schools that I studied, each of whom have adopted composting in some way. I start each one with a summary of the place, including background information on their respective environmental movements, and statistics about how effective their composting initiatives have been. I then go into more detail about each program, discussing the way each city or college goes about collecting, processing, and distributing the compost. The tab "What Can We Do?" deals with how this information may be applicable to us, and our attempts at increasing the prevalence of composting. These recommendations can also be used by other cities and schools looking to start food waste recycling programs. The "Sources and Recommendations" tab is a list of all of the websites, documents, and interviews I used to gather information for this project, with numbers correlating to footnotes that crop up throughout the website. I also added a paragraph with suggestions for any future research that might be done on this topic.
I hope this project is informative and thought provoking. Enjoy.
